Music notation programs are by necessity fairly complex. MuseScore is a user supported program that directly competes with some rather expensive professional products. My needs were such that paying for and keeping a commercial product current was not a viable option. I discovered MuseScore in its earlier 1.x version and was immensely pleased with the upgrade to 2.x. The old documentation was so-so (for version 1.x) but barely adequate. (It could be viewed online or downloaded as a PDF.) Note: I did have some previous experience with a commercial notation program about a decade back... but keeping it current (as the computer OS was upgraded) was not cost effective for my needs.)Version 2 of MuseScore is a much more polished program. The online instructions/reference manual are far more polished than the 1.x version... it is accessed through a browser -- and can be downloaded as a PDF. The online reference manual is a bit terse at times, making it necessary to experiment a bit to "get" how a feature works.The book is a well thought out explanation of the program -- it's independently produced and has about double the page count of the online instructions. It has numerous screen grabs as illustrations. (Minor gripe is that they're from a Windows computer and look clunky compared to the windows on a Mac.) Each chapter had a brief chart of the functions (and related commands) covered therein. Obviously with a book, you can place sticky notes -- and even keep a couple of fingers in the book so you can flip back and forth between relevant sections as you work on a notation project. (Once you're more experienced with the program, the need to have the reference manual at had will be reduced -- but there are many features that one might not encounter frequently, and having a reference manual is a big help

This is an excellent book to get the most out of MuseScore, which is an amazing piece of music notation software. Especially with the release of version 2 of MuseScore the program took a great leap in complexity so a book like this is a great adjunct to the online help that is built-in to the program. Marc has taken great pains to lay this book out in an orderly fashion so that anybody new to MuseScore, whether brand new to computer music notation software or moving over from some other program like Finale or Sibelius. Part of the price of this book helps to underwrite the continued development of the software, which is a great thing. I've been a long-time user of both Finale and Sibelius and I love MuseScore and recommend it to all my students and anybody who asks for a recommendation. And I will start suggesting that they all buy this book, too!

I love this book...MuseScore is a marvellous free program for composing or transposing music. I play recorders, particularly a bass recorder and I like the sound of the bass, but with much music written for soprano or alto recorder, requires mental gymnastics to play as written in the treble clef when one is used to music written on the bass clef staff, and MuseScore enables easy transposing of treble clef music into the bass clef. In any event, the MuseScore program has a million and one ways one can do all kinds of things, and this book, "Mastering MuseScore..." clearly and accurately defines what you can do with the program, and the various ways in which you can do it. If one is going to use MuseScore to write and print music, this book is a must-have for information and consultation when one wants to do something but doesn't quite yet know how. It covers all the bases.

MuseScore 2.3 isa free and open-source music notation program for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. It explores the process of note entry and editing including chord symbols, slash notation,time signatures, repeats, tablature, hidden items and more.. It is easy to read and follow, and I've always had good luck looking something up when I have come to a dead-end trying to figure out one of the more esoteric features of Musescore 2.3. Lots of illustrations are included for ease of use. MASTERING MUSESCORE is everything I needed to find out about the inner workings of using MuseScore, which is so powerful that many features may be overlooked without a good book like this. Musescore is free music notation software, but I'm so glad I bought the book, so I can master it. Literally.

Learning MuseScore hasn't been easy for me. The online FAQ or "manual" leaves a lot to be desired. Enter the Mastering MuseScore book! Wow! What a difference. Search the topical index in the back of the book and go to the page(s) that tell you what you need to know. A simple concept that worked for decades and in this case, much better than online. I'm just a beginner and this book has saved me much frustration. I highly recommend it, especially if you are just getting started. Kudos to the authors!

That's not due to deficiencies in the program design, but because music notation is inherently pretty complicated, and it takes some time to figure out which options work best for the particular score you're trying to create. Musecore is relatively easy to use and the book is absolutely invaluable. I use Musescore almost every day to create singing version of songs - in midi format - so I can practice the piano accompaniment, I do the same with cello duets - once again so I can practice the cello accompaniment. And for my Rounds & Canons group I can send out our songs in PDF format and also create MP3 files by first exporting the Musecore song in midi format and then using GarageBand to convert the midi file to an MP3 file. Julia Johnson divides her time between Dubai and an old water mill in Worcestershire, England. A thirst for adventure took Julia and her architect husband Brian to Dubai in 1975, where she soon became a familiar face reading children’s stories on Dubai Channel 33, subsequently appearing in BBC Television and Radio productions in the UK. She has toured schools in the Emirates and the UK in Theatre-in-Education productions, acted in several stage plays and recorded over 100 audio books. Jan, 2006: I'm no SDE, but I had a need to learn enough SQL to enable me to hit my company's Data Warehouse tables directly and employ some complex joins. This was the book recommended to me, and it did the trick. I sat down and began reading it and was quickly writing increasingly complex queries. I found the explanations easy to follow, and the format intuitive. The only fault I found is that there is a lack of more complex join examples, as when there are more than one field being joined on or more than two tables being joined.UPDATE, May 2012: It's been over 6 years now since I first started reading Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition to learn SQL. Since then, writing SQL to extract data sets out of our Oracle databases has become my primary role, and more recently I've begun managing some table spaces via DDL. A few years back I began training coworkers how to write Oracle SQL to perform extracts using this as the textbook. I've since written my own 100+ page training manual that ties in specifics of our system, uses examples in our data warehouse, and has homework assignments to practice what they learn - but I still recommend my students read at least chapters 1-6 and chapter 9 of this book. Based on my own experience using this book as the sole resource to learn SQL, those 7 chapters provide 80% of the knowledge needed to extract data out of an Oracle database to answer business questions. The rest of the book has proven somewhat useful for my load and transform needs, too (creating & managing tables).In case the authors are listening and thinking of doing a 3rd edition, I would make one main suggestion: Focus only on extracting data from Oracle databases, leaving the data manipulation functions (INSERT/DELETE/UPDATE/MERGE) for another book, or shift all manipulation topics to the later chapters. My students who are trying to learn to extract data get a little confused when, in chapter 1, these table manipulation functions are covered. Starting with SELECT, FROM & ORDER BY, moving to WHERE clauses and operators, then to dates, joins, etc. would make the early chapters more streamlined for someone new to SQL. I also found that there are some gems in much later chapters (like Advanced Grouping in Chapter 13) that seems more elementary than topics in earlier chapters (Partitioning, PL/SQL & Objects and Collections).Other reviewers have balked at the claim that this is a beginning SQL book, but I beg to differ. It starts with the absolute basics, and builds on that chapter by chapter. It doesn't assume you know anything, in my opinion, about databases or SQL. I believe the audience of the book stated on xi of the Preface is accurate, as I fell into the 'anyone who needs to access data stored in an Oracle database for reporting or ad-hoc analysis' bucket, and this book helped me succeed. I was a guy with a degree in Zoology and previous database experience limited to using MS Access, and this book (+ several years experience/practice) has turned me into an expert. Focusing only on the extract side of SQL, here are the key chapters (IMO) and what they teach:Chapter 1 gives a brief history of SQL and brief explanation of a database. Then it introduces the SELECT and FROM clauses, used to define the table(s) from which the data needs to be extracted, and the elements to extract. It also covers ordering of results using ORDER BY.Chapter 2 introduces the WHERE clause to enable filtering of results, and various operators (=, IN, BETWEEN) to create filtering conditions. It also briefly introduces multi-condition logic - aka how the query acts when you have multiple conditions in the WHERE clause.Chapter 3 covers how to join tables together in various ways (which I've found are the most difficult topic for new learners).Chapter 4 teaches methods of aggregating results via DISTINCT and GROUP BY, and also introduces the HAVING clause - used to filter results after aggregation.Chapter 5 shows how to nest one query within another, such that the innermost query executes first, then it's result set is treated like table in the outer query.Chapter 6 deals with dates and time, including various methods to transform text strings to dates and vice versa.Chapter 9 covers the DECODE, NULLIF, NVL, NVL2, and CASE functions - the If/Then functions of Oracle SQLI find the topics covered in these chapters meet nearly all my extract needs.For those who are looking for a companion to this book or are specifically looking for a reference to keep handy on Oracle SQL functions and syntax, I would recommend Oracle SQL: the Essential Reference. I find it has a more robust Index and is better for quickly finding info on a function, whereas Mastering is more verbose because it's providing instruction.

I am fairly new (less than a year) to SQL and have not gotten very good training in my current position. It has been difficult to find a book that not only gave more than the basics without being too complex for my experience. This has been different. I am loving this book. It is thorough and explains more than I have seen but in language you can understand having limited experience. This has been my best purchase for learning Oracle SQL.I purchased the Kindle version, however am thinking of having a hard copy as well.

Wow! I loved this book. After launching my SQL life with the "Head First SQL" book and about 10 months of SQL experience, I really appreciated this book. It covered concepts very clearly, gave good examples, and even tackled complex subjects in a very understandable way. I borrowed this book from a friend to scan it before an interview Business Intelligence role and found it very easy to quick-scan. I liked it so much that I bought my own copy as a reference going forward. A must for every every SQL-user's library.

I have taught myself SQL over the last year and this book has been a great asset. When I'm working on queries really late at night and everyone else has already gone home, this is a great resource for question answering. It also gives it to you in simple terms as opposed to programming languages, which can occasionally be incredibly difficult to translate. Then you not only have to translate the programmer-talk, but then teach yourself what you think they're trying to say.All in all, I can only recommend this book because some of the other books I have used just don't cut it.

I use sql daily and was wanted an additional resource beyond my normal websites that i could have on hand. The book is well written and i have picked up some additional tips and tricks.

At the time when I bought this (used for very cheap), I had several years experience supporting applications on MSSQL databases. So, I became decently skilled at T-SQL DML (But, very weak on DDL). Then, I got a new position working strickly with DML in Oracle 10g. This book allowed me to learn some of the trappings or Oracle' ANSI SQL DML. But, it also made me understand some concepts that I wasn't fully clear on in MSSQL T-SQL. Good read. Its several years old, but still relevant. This stays on my desk now. Theres alot of stuff covered in here thats on some of the OCA SQL exams like 1Z0-047 and 1Z0-051.I also bought it as an ebook from the Android Market. That was great as well - especially for office toilet time.Note that this doesn't really go into PL\SQL... Theres only a very short chapter that talks about the concept of a PL\SQL progam, but thats it. If you need PL\SQL coding, there's another OReily book for that. But, I like the fact that this book is focused on ANSI SQL.

A clear explaination of how to use multiple nested views has saved the day. I can now run a single query on my large table (the table has 83 Million rows in it) and it completes by in a few hours. I have enjoyed reading it and becoming more experienced in SQL. In the past I would use Perl/DBI to access the database but now I do it through sqlplus because of the large datasets I am working with. I wish I bought this book a loong time ago.

good text if a bit dense. came with no understanding of SQL, but needed a thorough understanding of DML for what underlies my Oracle database at work, with which I primarily interact using Access. Probably overkill, but I like to know what's going on under the hood.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I have friends who are former Teams guys who, along the way, helped me stay safe in my career thus I do have a special place in my heart for these guys. That said, I've never met Mr. Lacz so I have no personal connection with him though I learned, after reading his book that he apparently lives in my old stomping grounds in the Panhandle.I bought this book after seeing him on Fox & Friends talking about his book. I decided I'd buy it as a way of quietly supporting him and those who have fought for us. I figured it would be like all the other books out there where authors talks more about their accomplishment, with perhaps some embellishments here and there, mix in a little CDI (chick dig it) lingo and presto "I'm a hero." That is NOT the case at all here. Mr. Lacz gives the ground truth of war and the warriors who fight to protect our freedoms along with his own experiences, warts and all.The Last Punisher will put you under the helmet and in the books kicking of moon dust as you walk the streets of Ramadi. But where other "warrior" books want to share only the "good" stuff, Lacz shares some of the otherwise "boring" stuff to give the reader a better perspective of how things actually happen. He talks about the number of times they got geared up, stressed trying to get to their objective, finding nothing, then stressed getting safely back home. It happens. Not every day is profitable. Yet they still paid the fee in sweat equity and fatigue only to come up empty handed. But when they were profitable, grab your backside and hold on. If you've seen the movies; American Sniper, Lone Survivor, 13 hrs, and so forth, you can easily visualize where Lacz is taking you. You can easily visualize how SEALs move from cover to cover. You walk along side of him, preparing for a direct action contact. And you're there with the guys witnessing him screwing things up.But beyond putting you under the helmet, Lacz puts you in the head of a warrior and shares what it take to survive mentally. And why, when they come back home, they have nowhere near the difficulty readjusting to life than the other 98% of us would have. Sure their humor may be "sick" to some. Sure they may find something funny it's hitting the fan. It is something very difficult to grasp if you've never been there and Lacz takes us to there. "Teams and shhhstuff." (Forgive me Dauber but Amazon censors)Lacz does not get into the politics of war save for the REMFs (get the book for the definition) who were calling the shots putting people in harms way oftentimes with poor judgment. The politics were clearly pay grades above his and I believe he was right to leave his opinions out of this book. For managers and supervisor, pay attention here. Learn to read your people. Learn how to feed them and how to rest them. Learn how to keep them hungry for more. And if you're not shedding tears when he shares bringing Marc Lee (HOOYAH! MARC LEE) home, you're not human and you need to get yourself checked out.If you're an American, if you love this country, please show your support with the purchase of this book. It's such a small price to pay for what he and the SEAL Team THREE "Punishers" have given you.

Everybody has already said it but I think Kevin says it best, "Teams and Sh*t" and when he says it, you just get it. I think the book is a terrific story. I felt like I learned less about SEAL/s and more about Kevin and the men he served with. Dauber was a solid operator, a good man in front of the train or the back. He did it all and it was refreshing to get a real honest "New Guy" take on being a SEAL. I enjoyed the book tremendously and seeing the hints of friendship that existed between Kevin (Dauber) and Chris Kyle (American Sniper) were very humanizing. Chris's somewhat protective nature struck Kevin enough to write about it. I think Kevin has to write another book about his second deployment and after that he needs to clean the heavy weapons "Teams and Sh*t". If Kevin wrote it I'd even be interested in a book on Marc Lee. Kevin had bonded with Marc Lee and both he and Chris spoke very highly of that man. I know that as long as men like Kevin, Marc and Chris live and breathe the borders of this great nation will be clearly defined, proudly guarded and fiercely defended. Great book Dauber! Stoked for your second effort! Come on! Do it Dauber!!!Still a 5 star book. I saw another comment that gives the AUDIO part of this book 2 stars and I have to agree. ALL OF THE AUDIO BOOKS YOU CAN GET AS COMPANIONS TO KINDLE ARE TERRIBLE. Amazon if you are serious about this service then please get the MUZAK INSPIRED readers to put some interest into the text they are reading. Please fix this otherwise TERRIBLE AUDIO-BOOK SERVICE!!!

This is another great look into a world that not a lot of people get to see. To even have a fraction of understanding of what occurred overseas is very important and it should be something that every American strives to understand further. The author explained everything very well and effectively communicated what he and his teammates went through.As a fan of the Jocko podcast I have been fortunate to hear about this deployment from the officer side so it is refreshing to hear an enlisted guy's experience within the same deployment. Additionally, some of the people Lacz mentions in the book have been interviewed on the podcast. Having heard a 2-3 hours interview with Tony on the podcast it made the book that much more enjoyable and understandable.If you are interested in understanding the cost of the luxury we have today in America, listen to the podcast and buy this book.I bought the digital copy and it was well put together and easy to read.
