"Japanese apologies are more apt to communicate submissiveness, humility, and meekness whereas Americans are more apt to communicate sincerity," writes Lazare, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Under the surface of their differing presentations, however, in spite of their length or even sometimes their complete wordlessness, all true apologies are a kind of offering intended to restore the dignity and self-respect of the offended party, according to the author. An apology can work a miracle, inspiring spontaneous generosity and forgiveness on the part of the offended, whether it is a whole people or a single individual. Drawing on a vast array of literary and real-life examples, such as Agamemnon, George Patton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, from the current pope to the machinist who approached him after a lecture, Lazare lucidly dissects the process of apology: offering an explanation; communicating remorse, shame, humility or sincerity (according to our cultural values); making a gesture of reparation or reconciliation. Among the most moving examples in the book is Lincoln's second inaugural address, in which he apologizes for American slavery : "two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil" enabling some to "wring their bread from the sweat of other men's faces." About the Author

Claudia Ross is Professor of Chinese at the College of the Holy Cross, Massachusetts. She has served as President of the Chinese Language Teachers Association and as Director of the CET Chinese Program in Beijing. Her publications include Chinese Demystified (2010);The Lady in the Painting, Expanded Edition (2008); Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar: A Practical Guide, co-authored with Jing-heng Sheng Ma; Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar Workbook, co-authored with Jing-heng Sheng Ma and Baozhang He (both Routledge, 2006); Outline of Chinese Grammar (2004); and Traditional Chinese Tales: A Course in Intermediate Chinese (2001).

Baozhang He is Associate Professor in Chinese at the College of the Holy Cross, Massachusetts. He has served as Director of the Chinese Language Program at Harvard University and as Head Instructor in the "Princeton in Beijing" language program. His publications include Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar Workbook (Routledge, 2006), co-authored with Claudia Ross and Jing-heng Sheng Ma and Elementary Chinese (2006), co-authored with Pei-Chia Chen.

Pei-Chia Chen is a lecturer in Chinese at UC San Diego and has previously taught at Harvard University. Her publications include Elementary Chinese (2006), co-authored with Baozhang He.

Dr. Erika Rosenberg served on the faculties at the University of Delaware and the College of William and Mary and currently is a researcher at the Center for Mind and Brain at the University of California at Davis. Dr. Rosenberg is an emotions researcher, health psychologist, and teacher of meditation. Her research on emotion has examined how feelings are revealed in facial expressions, how social factors influence emotional signals, and how anger affects cardiovascular health.. Her current research interests include collaborative studies that integrate Western psychology with Buddhist practices for improving emotional and cognitive functioning.

Gregory Feist is Associate Professor of Psychology in Adult Development at San Jose State University. Dr. Feist is widely published in the psychology of creativity, the psychology of science, and the development of scientific talent. One of his major goals is establishing the psychology of science as a healthy and independent study of science, along the lines of the history, philosophy, and sociology of science. This is a cute book and I thought it was appropriate for my 12 year old nephew that is currently fascinated by survival stories and situations. There are some good tips along with a good dose of humor, if you are getting this for someone that is looking for information about a large array of topics this one is a winner. In my quick skimming of the book before we wrapped it up as a gift I learned a little bit about surviving an alien invasion as well as confirming something I had only heard about bear attacks (still no practical experience there but I am considering that a good thing).

My 9 year old loves this book. I was afraid that he wouldn’t really look at it, but he’s been studying it and carrying it around with him daily. His only complaint is that it doesn’t give tips on how to survive sisters. Go figure.

My 7 yo grandson loves the book, but the price sticker on the back severely damaged the cover. They could not have picked a stronger glue on the sticker or a cheaper grade of material for the cover. Don't wipe off the cover with a damp cloth. The ink will come off too.I'd give the book 5-stars for content and zero stars for construction materials. Thus a generous average of 3 stars overall.

I purchased 5 copies of this when my son and his friends all graduated from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts.It's part serious, part fun, and sometimes truly hilarious.They all seemed to like it a lot, and I heard a few good laughs while they were reading it.My son still reads it sometimes even now for Troop stuff.

Picked this up on a whim for my 7-year-old and he loves it. He has been providing me with survival tips for two weeks straight. This is a refreshing change from having him tell me about Minecraft. :-)

This is one of the generations old "The boys..." and "The girls..." survival books. Exactly why I bought it. These books are all awesome! This generation of the series is updated too. Everything from how to survive zompoc to how to build a dugout canoe is covered. Very fun for my boy to read.

I bought this book for my stepsons. Growing up in a family where boy/girl scouts were important. My grandmother was a girl scout leader for a very long time and my mother became a troop leader too when I was little. when it came time for my stepsons to start I was told their mother didn't approve of the scouts so I have been doing my best to teach them some of the things that I learned over the years. This book is great. It tells you how to survive different things and it is just fun. It tells you how to survive something step by step and doesn't go into too much detail to confuse the boy reading.

My grandson loved it. He is ten, barely sits still for a minute but enjoyed this book immensely! I was hesitant to buy it but it ended up being the best of several books that I suspected might intrigue him.

My 9 year old loves this book so much! He's totally into survival strategies, and says that he now has a basic nderstanding of how to land an airplane or escape from a car underwater- not that any of this is impending! In fact, the book does a great job of not scaring kids, but rather presenting them with interesting scenarios. It also mixes in some silly survival scenarios to help keep things light. Reluctant readers would really get a kick out of this, and it would be a good addition to any third-grade classroom Reading library.

About the Author
Paul Lauter is the Smith Professor of Literature at Trinity College. He has served as president of the American Studies Association and is a major figure in the revision of the American literary canon.

Richard Yarborough is Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of California-Los Angeles. His work focuses on African American literature and on the construction of race in U.S. culture. He directs the University Press of New England's Library of Black Literature series.

John Alberti teaches at Northern Kentucky University and has a Ph.D. in American literature from UCLA. His main area of research is multicultural American literature and culture.

Mary Pat Brady teaches U.S. Literature. She has written extensively on contemporary U.S. Latino literature.

Dr. Bryer is an expert on F. Scott Fitzgerald and is president of the International F. Scott Fitzgerald Society. He was an editor of DEAR SCOTT, DEAREST ZELDA: THE LOVE LETTERS OF F. SCOTT AND ZELDA FITZGERALD (Macmillan).
