About the Author

Hans Kung obtained a doctorate in theology from the Sorbonne in 1957. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1954. In 1962 he was named by Pope John XXIII a theological consultant for the second Vatican Council and played the key role in the writing of Vatican II, which radically modernized key areas of Catholic teaching. His questioning of traditional Church doctrines led to a 1979 Vatican censure that banned his teaching as a Catholic theologian, provoking huge international controversy. A settlement was reached a year later. He lives and teaches in Tubingen, Germany. His many books include On Being a Christian and Christianity: Essence, History, and Future.

Hans Küng wrote in the Foreword to this 1988 book, "This book is a document of a theologian's intellectual career. It discloses the standards and guidelines I have followed as I do theology and as I intend to go on doing it. This path led in a period of around three decades through confrontation with various Christian traditions to a truly ecumenical theology... 'My' hermeneutics... has always been seeking internal Catholic and ecumenical consensus..."He observes that "the death of religion expected in late modernity has not taken place... Not religion, but its dying off, was the grand illusion." (Pg. 7) He suggests that each confession (Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Catholicism) "should preserve what is good in its own tradition, but it should overcome its sectarian limitations and accept what is good in the other confessions." (Pg. 59) He argues that the "unconditionally reliable reality... is not the Bible texts and not the Fathers of the Church, nor the Church's magisterium, but God himself, as he spoke for believers through Jesus Christ." (Pg. 62) He asserts that "Through historico-critical research on Jesus, Christian faith is historically justified ... and protected against both churchly and unchurchly misinterpretations... There must be no contradiction between the Christ of faith and the Jesus of history." (Pg. 111)Later, he concludes that "We must not forget the followers of other religions are to be respected as such, and not to be subsumed in a Christian theology." (Pg. 236) Other religions can have a "positive validity," and are "conditionally true," which, "so far as they do not contradict the Christian message on decisive points, can by all means complete, correct, and enrich the Christian religion." (Pg. 254)All of Kung's theological works are challenging and well worth reading; this one is particularly noteworthy for its focus on theological "method."

One can admire the output of this leading theological writer. Over 78 entries alone on Amazon.com. This book's thesis is yet another extension of the modernist mindset, that just as science has learned that truth develops and matures as it progresses, so should theology. He interestingly hypothesizes that the real turning point in history was Luther succeeding in his arugument with Erasmus over original sin. For one who doesn't confess the inerrancy of Scripture, Kung easily feels the mistake lies with the church going with Luther. That's the prevailing case in his argument, shift the paradigm to reflect where current critical scholarship is on Scripture. Interesting account, but didn't sell with this believer.

I have not yet had time to fully read through it, but the parts I have read have been fantastic. I was afraid at first that it would be solely about the additions to the standard library rather than the core language, or that certain features would be excluded because they arrived too late during the writing of the book, but its all in there folks. Fold expressions, constexpr if, constexpr lambdas, initialization expressions in branching constructs, the whole nine yards. Some C++11 and 14 features are even touched upon, like safe pointers. Honestly, I'm just elated that constexpr got plenty of screen time because it's one of my favorite new features of the language. String_view makes an appearance too. There's quite a lot in these 503 pages. An excellent review of another massive expansion to a massive language.

Very nice discussion of the current state of the standard library - with some excellent examples.I wish it put all of the code together in a block, instead of piecing it out -And I wish it - and C++ standards committee, would stop wasting time on streams - they're an awful anti-pattern - but they seem to feel obligated to keep trying to pretend it's worth wasting your time on. It should only be taught as an object lesson in how not to design things.Well structured overall, clear, intelligent. I recommend it.

In terms of being a cookbook, then it serves its purpose well but it completely breaks down mid way through on the kindle edition on web. About midway through the pages become one column chars, which is ridiculously broken. Author should have tested this, so its kinda useless to me now. Please fix.EDIT: Kindle App on mac works fine and this is a great cookbook.

No way this book it's worth its high price! It's recipes are good, but nothing that we could not find in Stackoverflow.

Another solid book about C++17 just before the C++17 Standard is announced!Pros:- Practical, full of examples, demos, little utilities- Details of the approach, even with pictures and diagrams! :)- Cookbook style, read what you want- Shows how to make code compact- Shows how to use STL as building block for an app/problem- Focuses on modern C++, avoids using raw code style: pointers, C-style arrays, even raw loops- Introduces functional conceptsCons: Nitpicking: some samples might not work yet if your compiler is not in the C++ latest mode, or even experimental (will change soon).Not aimed at beginners, but if you have some experience with C++, you'll find something for yourself. The chapters are structured to be as clear as possible, with introductions and even pictures and diagrams.

Pretty much the only real resource for large quantities of example code using C++17 and experimental C++ features. I primarily used the filesystem stuff, and the experimental filesystem is absolutely awesome for how much easier it makes iterating through directories, checking a file's existence, and querying information about files (regardless of platform!). Otherwise, it covers useful but obscure utility classes pretty well, and espouses the use of important things like the lock classes that wrap mutexes in a safer manner.

I have mixed feelings about this book.On the one hand, if you ever write something like "call_cart", "cartesian" from Chapter 4 and do a pull request, I will not approve it, not ever.On the other hand, there are some tricks that may or may not be useful for real world C++, but always interesting never-less.As others has commented, there's some errors (stl iterators, ...) but overall I will recommend it. Just do not expect a "cookbook" style book, the "recipes" here will never make it through a code review on a team environment!

I used this book to start to learn from scratch how to programming Unix. This book is self-contained,concise and easy to read. FYI, it is very readable and not dry. There's a number of good diagrams, for example,illustrating file descriptors allocations and the effects of system calls like dup2, etc. The authors uses short code snipplet to illustrate how to use a particular system calls, which I think is rather neat. A number of "projects" very quickly help reader to expand their skill level. Of interest is also a project on distributed "Richard" and "Linda" , the forerunner of Sun's JINI. The authors could have expanded this book another 100 pages and make it a companion to Steven's "Advanced Unix System Programming". I strongly recommend this book to beginners, intermediate Unix Programmers.

This is an awesome book. You'll have to be patient when going through it. And you'll learn a lot if you follow along with the examples and make everything work. It took me probably 6 hours just to get through chapter 2 - not because I can't read, but because I'm paying attention to every little detail, and making sure I learn what's going on.The other thing that came as a big surprise, was that this is the best introduction to C i've come across. I've read quite a few books on C. Generally, I get through these other books on C - I get the syntax and pointers, and headers, etc. What I can never get through in these other C books, is that they use Math for all the examples. Which bores me, and sometimes frustrates me - because what I want to do with systems programming is not math - that's just me.Of all the C books I've read, this one, and "C - A Reference Manual 5th Edition" are the best C books.One pitfall in the book, is that with most of the examples, the conditionals to check pointers, and some other conditionals are somewhat amateur looking (that's just me). For example, in chapter 2, the "listlib.c" file has tons of conditionals like this:list_t **newptrs;if(headptr == NULL){ errno = EINVAL; return -1;}That started to confuse me, why not just write:list_t **newptrs;if(!headptr){ errno = EINVAL; return -1;}Which is ok. So there are many times where it seems the author is either purposefully writing conditionals to be verbose for readers, or doesn't know how to simplify with "not" flips.Another example:if(ptr != NULL)can be simplified to:if(ptr)Other than those small things, this book is great.EDIT: One other thing that's slightly annoying.The authors like to put all of their code in conditionals. Like this:if ((sigemptyset(&twosigs) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGINT) == -1) || (sigaddset(&twosigs, SIGQUIT) == -1)) perror("Failed to set up signal mask");For me that's ok in only a few places. They do it everywhere and it's really annoying. Maybe they did it just to save space in the book?

Opened the book, read the example, downladed the source code, in an hour I was flying and writing an asynchronous web server in Linux.For the networking stuff I never bothered to read the relevant chapters of the book since Stevens Network programming is the book I was trained by and it is still relevant.For my threading needs I used to use Butenhof's "Programming with POSIX threads", but this book has great examples and I learned a lot by browsing it. I mean I had a question about signal interaction with threads and the book had a section about it. Come on, it has saved my butt many many times. It is very comprehensive.I wholeheartedly recomend it to any serious systems programer, beginner or advanced.

Chatsworth, Georgia, in his place of business. Police and neighbors found only circumstantial
traces of the murderer: tire tracks, boot prints, shell casings, and five dollars in cash near
Osborn’s body. That day, three individuals—James Hugh Moss, a black family man locally
renowned for his baseball skills; Clifford Thompson, Moss’s white friend who grew up in the
Smoky Mountains; and Eula Mae Thompson, Clifford’s wife and a woman with a troubling history
of failed marriages and minor run-ins with the law—left Etowah, Tennessee, unknowingly
on a collision course with Deep South justice.

In chilling detail, Robert N. Smith examines the circumstantial evidence and deeply flawed
judicial process that led to death sentences for Moss and the Thompsons. Moving hastily in the
wake of the crime, investigators determined from the outset that the Tennessee trio, well known
as bootleggers, were the culprits. Moss and Clifford Thompson were tried and convicted within a
month of the murder. Eula Mae was tried separately from the other two defendants in February
1928, and her sentence brought her notoriety and celebrity status. On the night of her husband’s
execution, she recanted her original story and would change it repeatedly in the following years.
As reporters from Atlanta and across Georgia descended on Murray County to cover the trials
and convictions, the public perception of Eula Mae changed from that of cold-blooded murderer
to victim—one worthy of certain benefits that suited her status as a white woman. Eula Mae
Thompson’s death sentence was commuted in 1928, thanks in part to numerous press interviews
and staged photos. She was released in 1936 but would not stay out of trouble for long.

An Evil Day in Georgia exposes the historic deficiencies in death penalty implementation
and questions, through its case study of the Osborn murder, whether justice can ever be truly
unbiased when capital punishment is inextricably linked to personal and political ambition and
to social and cultural values.
