My eight year old read this book while we were doing early American history. It became his favorite book. He raved about it so much, he convinced my ten year old to read it. My ten year old liked it, but it wasn’t his favorite ever. It is a pretty easy read. I’d say second or third grade could easily handle it. The type is rather large and the chapters aren’t very long.

I am a teacher. I needed a couple of extra copies so my students could take the book home and read it a few nights a week. The students enjoyed the book so much that they read ahead of the assigned chapter and the book discussion began before they entered the room! They couldn’t wait to finish it but when we got to the last page they closed the book and said,”Noooo-it can’t end if there is no sequel!” (Keep in mind that I work with students that are below grade level.)

What a sweet, engaging, and simple yet well written tale! My ten year olds absolutely loved it, and were sad we finished it. Good thing we can reread!

Great story but definitely not for advanced readers. My 9 year old finished it within an hour. I probably should have looked at the page numbers! Regardless, she enjoyed the storyline.

Excellently written, lovely story. When I first read the synopsis of the story, I was concerned that it would be scary or oddly dated (regarding the father leaving his young daughter to live with an Indian family), but it was written so gently and so well that it never became uncomfortable. Just an interesting snippet of history, winsomely presented. A quick read, 8 chapters I think, but I read it aloud in one sitting.

I bought this book as a read aloud for my kids. (6, 4, and 2) They loved it! Even my 2 year old was talking about parts of the book. Great story to help introduce history to young minds.

We didn't like this book at first, but after 3 chapters, we were hooked! Both my 7 year old daughter and 4 year old son were begging me to keep reading at night!

It was perfect for my second grade grandchild. She enjoyed the book and it was at her reading level. She met the requirement her teacher requested.

About the Author
Marni Finkelstein is currently an adjunct professor John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and works as the Senior Research Associate Vera Institute of Justice, both in New York City. She received her doctorate in social/cultural anthropology from the New School for Social Research in 2001. Finkelstein also holds a Masters degree in journalism as well as social/cultural anthropology. The author spent two summers conducting field research in New York City and has included especially rich interview material and personal observations. As an anthropologist, her work focuses primarily on urban populations at risk. In addition to her research with street kids, she has conducted ethnographic studies on substance abuse, adolescence in the New York City foster care system, and victims of sexual assault. She lives, works, and teaches in New York City.

If you at all a fan of TED talks, you might recognize that the intention of each message is to challenge and provide the audience a call to action; to share an idea worth spreading. I believe the same principle should be true for a good book. H3 is most definitely one of them. And that's why I give it 5 stars.In this book, Lomenick shares that these three “H” words - Humble, Hungry, and Hustle – each map respectively to three of the most important questions that we should ask of ourselves – especially those who lead.• Who am I?• Where do I want to go?• How will I get there?Lomenick reminds us that “Leadership is more than hard work; it is habitual work.” He explains that leadership isn’t just about the decisions we make, it’s about the habits that we either intentionally create or passively allow, which drives our behavior - and ultimately our success. Our habits will ultimately answer those three questions.This book, when it's not in my hands sits prominately next to my "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" book by John Maxwell. It's a great resource for any leader.Lomenick reminds us that “Leadership is more than hard work; it is habitual work.” He explains that leadership isn’t just about the decisions we make, it’s about the habits that we either intentionally create or passively allow, which drives our behavior - and ultimately our success. I can see myself re-reading this a couple more times in various seasons. For today I will focus on two big takeaways that can be challenges for me.My Two Big Takeaways:A Habit of Stick-With-It-Ness: Take the Long ViewThe modern tendency is to assume that “newer” always means “better.” Whenever we hear about a new process or product, we want to pitch our old one and attain the newer, “better” one. But this behavior is not actually innovation; it is impulsiveness. True creativity is discerning, and it balances the need for “new” with patience and perseverance.I love new! I always try the new drinks at Starbucks as opposed to having a go-to favorite. I get easily excited over new ventures. So this habit comes less natural to me. It’s a great reminder that new needs to be balanced with patience and perseverance.2. A Habit of Meekness: Remember It’s Not About YouFIND SOMETHING YOU LIKE. I can be quick to judge an idea or find faults before I recognize the benefits. So I try hard to find something I like when someone offers a thought.Most days I get this but over and over again I need to be reminded of this so my actions match what I believe. It can be so easy to make things about yourself and not others. The concept of finding something I like in the ideas, writings and insights of others is one that can be easily applied. Being proactive about finding something I like can really help in this area.

Normally, I am a scifi, romance, urban fantasy reader...but I am trying to work up to earning a management leadership role at work. This book has a ton of great quotes and tips. The christian spin may not be everyones cup of tea, but an atheist would most probably be okay with it. It only hits at that sort of thing a few times and as a non-practicing christian I wasn't bothered by it.I would highly recommend it for anyone want to learn about servant leadership.

Half way through and I'm struggling to find substance or value. the book is full of ambiguous lists, lacks originality, poorly structured, disorganized, and epitomizes the leadership cliche of the writing world. this is a good book for people who will never be leaders. A waste of time for any actual leader seeking to improve, most leaders place great value in time. "conduct self-discovery exercises", "know who you are", "learn to be open and vulnerable" "learn to apologize". I'm a lifelong student of leadership. The title is more insightfulthan the empty pages behind it.

I enjoyed this book it offered a lot of useful and applicable items. I find leadership books can hard to go through if they are not focused on the topics. Brad breaks down his thoughts in bite sized pieces and let’s the reader digest the material easily. I did find that the book dragged on a bit, for a leaders book I also found that it was based more on experience.

The walls only stand if the foundation is strong.My favorite part of the book is how he leans on leaders from all different careers to share at the end of each chapter on how they execute what he just talked about.Would be a great book to go through for leadership development with your team.

Author talks about himself and religion too much. I don't care about reading endless pages about religion and your sabbatical and how you enjoyed a cup of coffee here and cup of tea there. It got old real quick. Find another book such as "Lead the Field" by Nightingale. Cover of the book makes it seem like I'm about to get punched with endless amount of motivational talk but my grandmother has a stronger uppercut than this weak book. Fail

This book was recommended to me and I have not completely finished the book but so far it a really good book. If your trying to lead a team and become an awesome leader this book is for you. I will come when I'm done and maybe add more to this review.
